Kerikeri Wastewater Treatment Plant

The Kerikeri Wastewater Treatment Plant was successfully completed and certified on 23 October 2020, delivering a modern, high-capacity facility to support the continued growth of Kerikeri and the wider Far North region.

SSP Engineering was contracted to fabricate and install stainless-steel pipework, as well as install key mechanical plant and equipment as part of the construction of the new wastewater treatment facility.

The new plant significantly increases treatment capacity to approximately 1,000 cubic metres of wastewater per day—three times the capacity of the previous Shepherd Road facility. It currently services wastewater from 1,090 connected properties and enables an additional 350 central Kerikeri properties to transition from septic tanks to the reticulated sewer network. A further 350 to 400 properties within the expanded reticulation area can also connect as demand increases.

Fully commissioned by May 2021, the facility allows Kerikeri—one of the Far North’s fastest-growing urban centres—to accommodate new residential and commercial development without further urban sprawl. The upgraded treatment technology prioritises efficiency, reliability, and future expansion, while delivering long-term environmental benefits by reducing reliance on on-site wastewater disposal systems.

This project provides a sustainable, long-term solution to capacity constraints and improves both quality of life and environmental outcomes for the Kerikeri community.
